Recently, Birch class enjoyed a very exciting and engaging morning all about the Stone Age. Charlotte Pratt, a teacher who works at Saffron Walden Museum, came to Wimbish for a workshop with Birch class. The session was for the class to gain a deeper insight into the stone age and to experience real objects that the people used at the time.

We investigated a range of objects: hand axes, flint knives, antler pickaxes, animal skins, arrowheads and even a real mammoth tooth (Yes, seriously! A thousands of year old, huge tooth). that had just been donated to the museum, which was discovered in a local quarry, and was soon to be catalogued and put on display. We shared in many discussions about the 3 ages of the stone age: Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic. The class then concluded our session with some stone age drawings which will be put on display in class.

The class were fully engaged in the session and the teacher from the museum commented about how knowledgeable they all were about the stone age.
